FCT-100 – Water and Sediment Test Kit
Diesel Fuel Water Content & Fuel Clarity Test
Not sure about old or new fuel? Your fuel problems could be coming from the supplier — check the fuel before you buy it.
Overview
Works with both clear and red dyed diesel fuel and heating oil. Designed as a simple field PASS or FAIL test — no lab required. Based on ASTM D4176. Results in less than 5 minutes.
- Two tests in one — Fuel Clarity + Suspended Water
- Detects water and suspended solid contaminants in diesel fuel
- Results in less than 5 minutes
- Non-toxic and completely safe
- Failed tests require fuel polishing or maintenance
- Part # FCT-100
How to Read Results
- PASS — All 5 indicator marks are visible — fuel is clean and bright
- FAIL — Indicator lines disappear — contamination present, polishing required
Before You Begin
Remove the capsule from the test jar and hold it aside for step two. Do not put fuel in on top of the capsule.
Do not open capsules until you are ready to test — you will collect moisture from the air and get a false reading.
Use a permanent marker to record the date and source of the sample on the jar for future reference.
Test Procedure One – Fuel Clarity
- Take a fuel sample from the bottom of your fuel tank. The closer to the bottom the better. Fill the test jar past the top indicator rectangle #5.
- Hold the sample up to the light and visually examine for haze or lack of clarity. Swirl the sample to produce a vortex and examine the bottom for water and solids.
- If you can see free water, stop the test — the fuel has failed. No need to continue to part two.
- PASS — Clear and bright fuel with rectangles #1 and #2 clearly visible
- FAIL — Cloudy fuel — rectangles #3, #4, #5 not clearly visible. Fuel polishing required.
Test Procedure Two – Suspended Water in Fuel
- Open the capsule and pour the powder contents into the test jar.
- Put on the lid and shake for 10 seconds.
- Hold the jar upright and allow the mixture to settle.
- Examine the powder at the bottom of the jar for colour.
- PASS — White powder at the bottom — no significant water detected
- FAIL — Pink spots = 10–49 ppm water. Hot pink powder = 50+ ppm water. Action required.
Compatible Fuels
- Clear diesel fuel
- Red dyed diesel fuel
- Heating oil
Disclaimer
All engine manufacturers have a zero tolerance for water and particulates over 2 microns in fuel. This test offers a general indicator of fuel quality only. Retain this test for future reference.
